Course Summary & Description:

This course details the benefits of utilizing wood raised floor construction in residential applications. The typical raised floor construction system consists of wood joists bearing on wood beams which span to either piers (typically concrete or masonry) and/or knee walls.

The raised floor construction technique offers several key advantages over standard concrete (slab on grade) construction. Wood is a sustainable construction system and a renewable resource. Materials are readily available and construction sequencing is flexible with other trades. In flood-prone areas, this type of system provides a practical and cost-effective solution for reduction in flood damage. Additionally, this type of system can be utilized in areas with expansive soils allowing for an economical solution to soil conditions which would otherwise restrict construction.

Preventing standing water from accumulating in crawl spaces, draining storm water away from the structure, removing excess moisture and providing adequate ventilation from the crawl spaces are key factors in building and maintaining a residence with raised floor construction. If properly constructed, a raised floor system can provide a peace of mind for both the builder and the property owner.
