Course Summary & Description:

The Highway and Rail Transit Tunnel Inspection Manual was developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to provide uniformity and consistency in evaluating the physical condition of the various tunnel components.

The guide begins with definitions of tunnel construction and systems including situations where the various tunnel types are defined. The construction methods and lining types are also described in detail inclusive of the different types of ventilation and lighting systems for tunnel construction.

Inspection procedures for civil/structural elements, mechanical systems and electrical systems are provided in combination with frequencies and items to identify during inspection. Tunnel inspection requirements are also described, including inspector qualifications, responsibilities and required equipment and tools. In conclusion, the appropriate inspection documentation is covered in which the required field data and repair priorities are defined as well as a description of the inspection report requirements is provided.
